Dulux’s most popular whites have earned cult status for a reason. If you’re in Australia, you’ve definitely heard of Lexicon® Quarter, Natural White™ and Antique White U.S.A.®. They’re the ride-or-die shades people come back to again and again - the ones that quietly outlast trends and still look good doing it. Naturally, they were our top three contenders for this room makeover.

THE BEFORE: BEAUTIFUL BONES, BUT A BIT DAGGY

This living room had beautiful bones - soaring pitched ceilings lined in warm timber, loads of natural light and generous proportions. But it felt heavy, dated and daggy.

The creamy yellow walls were adding warmth to an already warm space. The trims disappeared, and everything sat in the same tonal family, which meant the architecture got a little lost.

We didn’t need more colour. We needed restraint, clarity… heck, we just needed the white right to create the backdrop for some beautiful styling!

Walls: Dulux Antique White U.S.A.®

After sampling a whole lineup of whites, Dulux Antique White U.S.A.® was the clear winner for the walls in this transformation.

In a timber-heavy room like this, choosing the right white is everything. Go too cool and the ceiling throws orange. Go too warm and the whole space starts to feel heavy.

Antique White U.S.A.® sits beautifully in between - warm without tipping yellow, creamy without feeling beige, soft without ever looking flat.

The moment it hit the walls, the shift was instant. The room felt brighter, and the timber ceiling looked richer and more intentional. Natural light bounced around the space instead of being absorbed, and it set the perfect canvas for the new furniture and artwork to shine.

On the walls, we used Dulux Wash&Wear® Low Sheen because of its hard-wearing, washable finish, which is super important in a family living room. It allows you to wipe away most everyday marks, scuffs, and stains with a damp cloth, so sticky fingerprints and mystery smudges don’t become permanent features of your design. The walls keep looking freshly painted for years, not just for the reveal photos.

Because a white this good deserves to stay that way.

Skirting & Architraves: Dulux Camel Hide

Trims are to walls what your favourite contour stick is to your face 😉 - subtle, but seriously transformative.

With that gorgeous timber ceiling overhead, we didn’t want the details quietly fading into the background. Painting the skirting boards and architraves in Dulux Camel Hide gives the room definition - like a soft contour that gently frames everything and makes the whole space pop.

It’s not loud or showy, but it adds just enough contrast to sharpen the room and make the architecture feel more intentional, while still sitting comfortably next to Antique White U.S.A.®.

The trims are painted in Dulux Aquanamel® Semi Gloss, which adds just enough sheen to catch the light and give the trims a tailored, finished feel. It’s also durable - handy, because trims in family homes tend to get knocked, bumped and generally lived on.

CEILING & CORNICES: DULUX ANTIQUE WHITE U.S.A.®

With such a striking timber ceiling, our approach was simple: let it shine.

For the plastered ceiling areas and cornices, we used Dulux Ceiling Flat in Antique White U.S.A.® to create a seamless transition from wall to ceiling. Keeping the same tone overhead makes the space feel cohesive and calm, without unnecessary contrast.

The flat finish minimises glare, softens light reflection and helps disguise surface imperfections, which is especially important in a room flooded with natural light.

The biggest of them all was their stunning new-build home in Burleigh Head, which went on to win gold at the Queensland Master Builders Awards in the ‘Medium Density up to 3 Storeys – 2 to 5 Dwellings’ category.

Due to a serious back injury Toni sustained overseas, a three-storey home wasn’t ideal - but the block demanded it. Their plan was to live in this beauty while tackling a few side projects to keep the reno bug satisfied.

Then the house they’d dreamed about buying for 17 years came on the market… and everything changed.

They purchased a single-storey 1960s beach bungalow (their next project 👀), and their award-winning home sold at auction just weeks after hitting the market. Surprised? Neither were we.

🏆 A CHARACTER COTTAGE THAT STOLE THE SHOW

Thirroul, NSW

Kate Potter’s character-filled cottage didn’t just win its category at the Building Designers Association of Australia Awards; it beat out large commercial-scale projects to take overall first prize in the BDAA Greater Sydney Chapter Awards!

Small in size but huge in heart, this charming cottage renovation honoured its history while completely transforming its functionality.

Originally a two-bedroom home steeped in local history, Kate and her husband committed to renovating, not rebuilding, after meeting the daughter of the previous owner, Maisie, who raised five children there.

🏆 A LITTLE BUSHLAND RETREAT WITH BIG AWARDS

Brisbane, QLD

Reno School student Carolynn McLean’s stunning “little inner-city bushland retreat” took home Gold in the ‘Sustainable Building Design – Residential’ category at the Building Design Queensland, Brisbane Regional Design Awards.

Built into the beautiful bushland of Seven Hills in Brisbane, this home was designed as a sustainable and environmentally responsible retreat. The dwelling’s compact footprint encourages a strong connection with the surrounding landscape while minimising its environmental impact.

And the accolades didn’t stop there.

The ‘Tranters Avenue Residence’ was also awarded HIA Queensland House of the Year in 2023, and went on to be named Runner Up in the National House of the Year awards. Casual overachiever. 🏆

We love seeing our students create homes that are not only beautiful but thoughtfully designed to work with their environment.

🏆 FROM PIPE DREAM TO AWARD-WINNER

Noosa, QLD

Reno School student Carina Neale’s stunning Noosa home was awarded Gold in the ‘New Home’ category at the Building Design Queensland, Sunshine Coast Regional Design Awards.

But the recognition didn’t come without the emotional rollercoaster that often comes with building a home from scratch.

“Building a home was certainly a pipe dream for me. I love design, interior styling and I’m known to love a project! We threw everything at it, testing every emotion - and our marriage at times! For the most part I’m proud of what we’ve created and forever grateful we had the opportunity to build a house.”

🏆 FROM 80s HOUSE TO AWARD-WINNER

Port Macquarie, NSW

Julianne Weatherley’s renovation was not for the faint-hearted.

Originally built in the early 1980s and designed by local Port Macquarie architect John Walsh, the home underwent a complete internal rebuild under the guidance of architect Robert Snow.

The transformation was extensive. The house was stripped back to its core, with all electrical and plumbing systems replaced, along with new walls, ceilings, bathrooms and kitchen. The renovation also included roof insulation and external cladding upgrades, structural steel posts and beams, and crane work to complete the structural changes.

We’re talking MAJOR transformation.

Julianne’s home went on to win the Housing Industry Association (HIA) Northern NSW Awards 2023 in its category. 🏆

1. We kept the existing layout

Why it works: Moving walls is fun… until the invoices start rolling in. Layout changes are one of the quickest ways to churn through your budget. Unless you really need to, keeping your existing floorplan the same will help you save money.

How we did it: We left the existing layout exactly as it was and focused on cosmetic upgrades instead. The only wall that got a sledgehammer through it was the one between the living room and the kitchen. Opening up this space was game-changing to the overall flow of the home, without changing the actual layout.

Steal this: If a space functions fine, don’t touch it. Invest your budget in finishing, like paint, flooring and furniture, to bring your vision to life instead.

2. worked with existing plumbing locations

Why it works: Plumbing is expensive, messy and never as simple as you think it’ll be.

How we did it: While some plumbing locations shifted within the bathroom spaces, the bathrooms themselves didn’t move at all. We kept the kitchen, bathroom and laundry locations where they were and avoided relocating plumbing between rooms, then levelled things up with beautiful tapware and finishes which totally transformed the bathrooms.

Steal this: Keep plumbing changes contained within existing rooms wherever possible - moving it across the house is where costs really blow out.

3. USED Curtains instead of wardrobe doors

Why it works: Custom wardrobe doors across multiple rooms can add up quickly.

How we did it: We skipped joinery doors and used full-height curtains instead, which softens the rooms and adds that relaxed, layered vibe we love. And added super cute curvy pelmet details for full luxe vibes.

Steal this: Curtains are cheaper, cosier and way easier to change down the track than doors.

4. refurbished the existing pergola (& made it a pizza parlour)

Why it works: Ripping things down and starting again is rarely the cheapest option. If you’ve got features you can revamp to bring back to life or use for another purpose - go for it!

How we did it: The little pergola in the backyard had good bones, but it was rundown and had no purpose. We repainted it, scrubbed the roof and added decking underfoot to turn it into the perfect spot for a pizza party.

Steal this: Before you demolish, ask yourself: Can this be saved or reimagined?

5. OPTED FOR Plain cabinet profiles + luxe hardware

Why it works: Fancy cabinetry profiles cost more but aren’t the only way to achieve a beautiful kitchen.

How we did it: We chose simple, clean cabinet doors which cost considerably less and made them feel luxe with beautiful statement hardware.

Steal this: Keep cabinetry basic and let the handles steal the show.

6. Colour-drenched THE BEDrooms

Why it works: Multiple paint colours = more cutting-in = more labour = more money. Using one colour everywhere will save time and cost.

How we did it: We colour-drenched walls, trims and doors in the same shade for a bold look and quicker paint times.

Steal this: One colour everywhere looks luxe and super cosy… and saves on labour too.

7. designed spaces to work harder

Why it works: Multi-purpose spaces save you from adding extra rooms (and extra cost).

How we did it: The new backyard shed can be used as a shaded hangout, sleepover spot and storage zone - one small space, so many possibilities. Inside the house, we built an L-shaped custom daybed that works as a sofa by day, bed by night.

Steal this: If something can do two jobs, let it!

8. let styling do the heavy lifting (not building work)

Why it works: Furniture, rugs and lighting are way cheaper than moving walls. By leaning into styling, you can completely transform the look and feel of a space - without the structural spend.

How we did it: We solved layout challenges with clever styling and made the most of our Dream Discount Card, saving every single time we shopped for furniture, homewares and finishing touches.

9. SWAPPED TIMBER FLOORING FOR TIMBER LOOK HYBRID

How we did it: We chose a high-quality timber-look hybrid that mimics the tone and grain of real timber, so visually, nothing was compromised. It’s scratch-resistant, water-resistant and far more forgiving in high-traffic areas, making it ideal for everyday life while keeping the budget in check.

Steal this: Compare the costs of solid timber, engineered timber, hybrid and laminate flooring side by side. Weigh up the pros, cons and long-term durability of each, then choose the option that gives you the look you love at a price that works for your budget and lifestyle.

10. repeated finishes THROUGHOUT the house

Why it works: Repeating finishes saves money, reduces waste and makes everything feel calm and cohesive.

How we did it: We used the same finishes across multiple rooms, which helped with bulk ordering and made the whole home flow beautifully - including the same flooring across the kitchen, living, hallway and bedrooms.

Why a Vision Board Is the Most Important Step of Any Reno

If you’ve ever been halfway through a renovation thinking, “How did we end up here?” - chances are the vision wasn’t clear from the start.

A vision board is what keeps you grounded when:

• decision fatigue kicks in

In our books, it’s non-negotiable to have your vision board nailed before a single nail is hammered. Share it with your builder, show it to your tiler, shout it from the rooftops. It’s the quickest and most effective way to get everyone on the same page and visualise the end result.

How We Create Vision Boards (The Three Birds Way)

We start every reno by:

1. Naming the vision
   Sum the whole project up in 3–5 words. Big picture only.

2. Defining the feeling
   Calm? Energised? Like you’re on holiday every day? Lock it in.

3. Collecting the inspo
   Pinterest, Instagram, screenshots galore - then we pull everything together so the story is clear on one page.

Remember: A vision board isn’t about copying someone else’s home image for image. It’s about being inspired by the things you love: the shapes, the colours, the textures, the design details and, most importantly, the way a space makes you feel. When we create a vision board, including for The Eclectic Escape, we’re not saying “we want this exact room”, we’re saying “we love that scalloped details, the practicality of that super cute garden shed, the confidence of that colour” - and then we put our own spin on it. A great vision board gives you direction without boxing you in, helping you create a home that feels cohesive, intentional and uniquely yours.

Having used Reece’s Mizu tapware and Posh Domaine vanity ranges in previous projects, we knew we could customise tapware colours and sizes, along with vanity finishes and benchtops, across the bathroom, ensuite and powder room (and even the kitchen and laundry) to suit the size and layout of each space and the style of the home.

Tucked away from the hustle and bustle of city life, this little holiday house has always been a special place for its owners. It’s their summer base – the kind of home made for family time, slow mornings and a steady stream of friends popping in to stay.

But years of coastal weather (plus one wild storm that sent a huge tree crashing through the roof 😳) meant the house was well overdue for a refresh. If you haven’t already, you need to watch the episode to see what we mean!

Along with replacing the leaking roof and repairing water-damaged kitchen, bathroom and flooring throughout, the layout needed to work harder too. And honestly, it felt like the perfect opportunity to bring some fun, colour and personality back into the space.

You know the drill. The owners handed us the keys, the budget and full creative freedom, with just one rule: no red allowed.
Game on!

STARTING WITH A COLOUR VISION

Every Three Birds project starts with a vision board, and for The Eclectic Escape, pops of colour were part of the plan from day one. We wanted the house to feel relaxed, layered and happy – a true holiday escape where time slows down and summers seem to stretch on forever.

From that feeling, the colour palette fell into place. Warm neutrals and coastal pastels were layered with tactile finishes, pattern and texture to create a soft, sun-kissed feel throughout. Each room has its own personality, but the colours flow effortlessly from space to space, giving the whole home that easy, breezy ‘Vacay Vibes at Home’ feel we love.

SETTING THE TONE FROM THE OUTSIDE IN

We started outside, giving the exterior a full refresh using Dulux Weathershield in Grey Master. It’s a calm, confident grey that instantly grounds the façade and gives the house so much presence. The trims were finished in Dulux Berkshire White, a gorgeous creamy white that freshens everything up and helps the home sit beautifully within its leafy surrounds.

Together, these colours set the tone for the relaxed coastal vibe waiting inside.

A WARM, COLOUR-FILLED HEART

Inside, colour is what ties everything together, and it was important that the living, dining and kitchen flow as one big, light-filled indoor–outdoor zone. To create cohesion, we used Dulux Pollinate Half on the walls, ceilings, trims and doors. It’s soft, warm and has this magical way of making everything glow – even on cloudy days.

The kitchen is the heart of the home and a real standout. The cabinetry (also Dulux Pollinate Half) is paired with beautiful hardware and incredible green onyx benchtops. The stone brings in natural movement and texture, adding a luxe feel without being OTT.

For the splashback and a feature border on the rangehood, we used the gorgeous glossy ‘Hue’ tiles in the colour Clay from Amber, laid in a mix of squares and rectangles for that perfectly imperfect, handmade look. The warm clay tone works beautifully with the green onyx, so we leaned into it and created another little design moment by tiling the leg of the island in a complementary terracotta tone - this time using the Cushion Subway tile.

Tiles are one of our favourite ways to add colour and personality to a home without overwhelming a space. They’re practical, durable and such an easy place to be a little bit playful – especially when you take them beyond the obvious spots. Tiled stair risers? Yes way, rosé!

We carried the same Amber ‘Hue’ Gloss tiles used in the kitchen splashback onto the risers, creating a subtle but super-cute colour moment as you move from the living spaces to the bedrooms and bathrooms. We loved this detail so much that, when you’re onto a good thing, you repeat it - this time on the fireplace mantle. It’s these little moments of repetition that help a home feel connected and thoughtfully layered from room to room.

BEDROOMS WITH THEIR OWN COLOUR MOMENTS

Each bedroom got its own colour moment, and honestly… the jury’s out on which one we love most.

The main bedroom is wrapped in Dulux Dromedary, a warm, earthy orange that instantly makes you want to slow down and stay a while. We used the same colour on the walls, ceilings, skirting, architraves and decorative pelmets to fully cocoon the space. It feels cosy, grounding and perfect for long, lazy holiday sleep-ins.

The guest bedroom is painted in Dulux Vanilla Ice Half, used on all surfaces for a soft, calming feel. Paired with earthy styling, it proves once again that blue and brown are a match made in heaven.

The kids’ room is drenched in Dulux Sand Diamond, a gentle golden shade that feels like golden hour on repeat. It’s warm, happy and full of personality – the perfect colour to make a small room glow.

BATHROOMS WITH PERSONALITY

Bathrooms are the perfect place to have a little fun with colour and pattern. They’re compact, practical and ideal for dialing up personality.

In the main bathroom, colour takes centre stage. We used 200x200 ‘Tiffany’ tiles in Blue and Butter (available in-store at Amber) to create the sweetest checkerboard pattern on the floor. The walls are finished in the same ‘Tiffany’ tile in Butter, keeping the space warm and light, while ‘Hue’ Gloss tiles in Clay add a detail that ties beautifully back to the kitchen and living areas.

The ensuite packs a punch with colour and pattern. Amber ‘Travertine’ Matte tiles in Ivory were used on both the floor and walls to create a calm, sandy base that feels perfectly at home in this relaxed coastal setting. They give you all the beauty of natural travertine, but in a durable porcelain tile that’s easy to live with – ideal for a high-traffic holiday house. The ‘Hue’ tiles pop up again too, this time in Ocean paired with Clay, adding just the right amount of colour without overpowering the space.

The powder room is where we had a little extra fun. The floor features ‘Zahri Mosaic’ tiles in Natural Multicoloured (available in-store), bringing instant personality and making this small space feel special and memorable.

You might remember a few years back when our friends at Dulux set us the challenge to totally transform a kitchen, using their Renovation Range of paint. But, there was a catch… this kitchen renovation project needed to be unbelievable, unrecognisable and wait for it… under $10k!

We gladly accepted the challenge and set to work to bring a daggy old kitchen back to life. The biggest cost by far was the $3k in labour for our painters. We leave the big jobs to the experts, but you could certainly DIY at home to save money. And then there was the $1,240 on the new sink… take those items out and we’d be down to under $5k!

The stools were our best bargain basement buy - we found these beauties at Kmart for only $70. Lucky for us, the kitchen floor was fine as it was and didn’t need updating, which saved costs on both paint and labour. Labour costs can account for 40% - 50% of your total budget but we think that’s money well spent! Be sure to hire professionals who take pride in and certify their work.

We recently took a little day trip to Berrima to soak up the magic for ourselves… and wow, did it deliver.

IT WAS Love at First Sight

Catherine and Iain live in Sydney with their two boys, but they always dreamed of having a simpler, more earthy escape, a place where they could connect with nature and the land. Although still based in the city, they longed for a country retreat they could escape to as often as possible, where their boys could experience rural life firsthand. For Catherine, who studied agriculture in high school, the dream of owning a small piece of countryside had always been close to her heart.

That dream became real the moment they stepped onto the 2.5-acre property in Berrima. “It was the first and only country property we viewed,” Catherine says. “We saw it and just knew it was the one.”

Their new property came with two dwellings, which meant two exciting opportunities to renovate and create spaces perfectly suited for weekends away, school holidays with their boys and future guests (hello, not one but two Airbnbs!).

The first dwelling was The Lodge, a character-filled four-bedroom weatherboard home. The second was The Cottage, an adorable two-bedroom A-frame that was brimming with potential. Both homes had great bones, but they were tired and in need of the loving touch of someone with vision.

Enter Catherine and Iain.

The RenoVATION Journey

Armed with her Reno School know-how, Catherine set out to breathe new life into both homes on the property. While the updates inside the dwellings were mostly cosmetic, the overall project was far from simple. They also tackled a huge amount of infrastructure work on the land, which turned out to be far more than they initially anticipated. This included installing new water tanks, repairing the dam, updating the irrigation system and improving drainage across the sprawling 2.5 acres. It was the kind of behind-the-scenes work no one sees, but it is absolutely essential to the smooth running of a property like this.

Once the essentials were sorted, Catherine shifted her focus to the interiors. The transformations were cosmetic but impactful: fresh paint, refreshed finishes, thoughtful styling, and carefully reinstated charm that brought each home back to life.

The biggest challenge came with repainting the soaring vaulted ceiling in the A-frame Cottage. Scaffolding had to be brought inside the home, and the original timber continuously bled through the paint, requiring coat after coat. It was painstaking and slow, but the bright, airy result made every coat worth it.

The property is constantly evolving. Catherine has planted fruit trees, re-established garden structures, revived a clay tennis court, and has plans for a pool and a dreamy glasshouse.

Her long-term dream is to retire at Coromandel Homestead… and maybe watch her boys get married there one day. (We’re not crying, you’re crying!)

The Gardens — A Wild, Romantic Wonderland

The gardens of Coromandel Homestead are a world of their own and are often compared to a private version of Sydney’s Centennial Park- but with even more beautiful flowers! The grounds feature blossoming cherry trees, persimmons, pears, crab apples, Japanese maples, rare old-world roses, ancient conifers, two serene dams (complete with yabbies), several stunning fire pits, and charming outbuildings.

There is even a clay tennis court, which is a real rarity in the Highlands. Catherine discovered this first-hand when they purchased the property and attempted to revive it. They had to bring a specialist team up from Melbourne to resurface the court and replace the vinyl lines. There were so many nails to secure in place, it truly was a labour of love.

The Cottage also features the most gorgeous outdoor bath, perfect for long, slow soaks under the stars.

Catherine says, “It is bucolic, wild, enchanting” - everything you could want in a countryside escape.

Thoughtful, Sustainable, Soulful Style

Inside both dwellings, Catherine has created spaces that feel warm, layered, curated, and lived-in in the best way. Her style blends old and new, with vintage treasures gathered from her travels and family heirlooms that honour the heritage of the home. She believes sustainable style is not only possible but beautiful - and Coromandel Homestead proves exactly that.

Adding to the soul of the spaces are original artworks by Janis Clarke of Olsen Gallery (Catherine’s brother-in-law), whose pieces bring warmth, colour, and personality into every room.

History Repeating ITSELF

The homestead’s story began in the 1980s when a Sydney couple (who, incidentally, lived down the road from Catherine and her family in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs) purchased the acreage as a weekend escape for their family. They planted the now-established gardens, built the two dwellings, and created the foundations of the enchanting estate Catherine and Iain now cherish.

In a beautiful twist of fate, Catherine tracked down the original owner, Billy. Before he passed away, he shared stories about the land, the trees, and the history embedded in every corner. The dinghy he named after his wife, Pixie, still rests on the dam today.

"I hope we’ve done him proud," Catherine says.
And we’re absolutely certain she has.

One of her smartest ideas sits right in the living area - a hideaway desk. During the work week, it’s her little productivity hub. But when guests arrive, it closes in seconds and disappears into the cabinetry. No paperwork. No laptop cords. No visual reminders of day-to-day life. We Aussies are pretty obsessed with our outdoor spaces (and for good reason). Whether it’s backyard BBQs, sunset spritzes on the deck, or watching the kids splash around in the pool or run through the sprinkler - the alfresco life is the good life.

But if your outdoor area’s feeling a bit neglected after winter, don’t stress. With a few clever styling moves, you can turn even the most underused corner of your yard into a heavenly summer escape.

Here’s how you can do it, step by step, no renovation required.

Step 1: Choose your zones wisely

Before you bolt out the door and start shopping for all the bits you think you’ll need for your alfresco makeover, sit down, take a breath and ask yourself this: how do we actually want to live out here?

Perhaps you’re all about long lunches and need a dedicated dining area. Maybe you love lazy afternoons lounging by the pool. Or maybe, if you’re lucky, it’s both (plus a pizza oven, fire pit and soccer pitch… we can dream, right?). Your alfresco area should be an extension of the way you live, not just your house.

If space is tight, choose just one zone that’ll make the biggest impact. A comfy outdoor lounge might win out over a dining table if your inside table is close by. The trick is to use your space the way you’ll love it (and use it!) most.

Working out what you want from alfresco life will help you decide which elements to include. Once you’ve made that decision, your next stop is your vision board (of course). It ALWAYS comes back to your vision board!

Top tip: stand at your back door and look out - the natural sightlines will help you decide where each “zone” should sit. You might notice the sun hits one corner perfectly for morning coffee, or another stays shaded for afternoon lounging. Let the light guide your layout.

Step 2: Bring your indoor style outside

We always say your alfresco should feel like your home style just kept going. Don’t fall into the trap of going rogue on your vision board and creating a whole new style, just because you’re stepping outside.

Use the same colour palette and materials you’ve got inside to create a gorgeous indoor/outdoor flow. If you have warm timbers and gold accents in your kitchen, carry those out with timber furniture and a golden-hued pendant. If you love soft neutrals and rattan inside, keep the vibe going outdoors with woven textures and creamy cushions.

A little matchy-matchy is actually a good thing here - it keeps your whole home telling the same story.

Step 3: Pick the right furniture

Your outdoor furniture is what defines your zones and gives the space purpose. But here’s the thing - bigger is not always better. Always measure before you buy - outdoor furniture tends to look smaller in the showroom, but it can crowd your space fast.

You don’t want your deck so full of furniture that no one can move without playing Twister. If you’ve got the space, go for a 75–90cm walkway between pieces of furniture -it instantly feels more comfortable. And in busy zones where people pass each other, 100–120cm is the sweet spot. Empty space is just as important as the filled bits.

And don’t forget weight - lightweight furniture can be a win outdoors. It lets you reconfigure your space for parties, pool days or just a fresh new look whenever you feel like it.

As for materials, please only use pieces made for the great outdoors. All-weather wicker, aluminium, or quality outdoor timber that silvers beautifully over time - they’ll all survive our Aussie sun way better than that old indoor chair you “temporarily” moved outside three summers ago.

$$$-saving tip: If your budget’s tight, invest first in seating (it’s what gets used most) and add smaller tables and other styling items later.

Step 4: CUSHIONS & RUGS ARE ABSOLUTE WINNERS!

If we could give you one alfresco styling commandment, it would be this: thou shalt never skip cushions.

They’re the easiest way to zjoosh up an outdoor space and make it feel like home. Go for quality outdoor fabrics (so you’re not bringing in soggy mouldy messes every time it rains) and don’t be afraid of a little pattern or colour. Replicating indoor cushion patterns in an outdoor fabric is a great way to keep things cohesive.

And while we’re at it - don’t forget the rug! Outdoor rugs are total game changers. They anchor your furniture, define a zone, and make concrete or pavers feel warm and intentional. Plus, if your porch floor’s looking tired, an outdoor rug is the quickest facelift you’ll ever give a space.

Our best advice: Our go-to combo for cushions is one solid base cushion, one pattern, one texture, repeated in pairs for balance. And when layering rugs, go up a size bigger than you think you need. It instantly makes your zone feel more luxe.

Step 5: Light it right & ADD GREEN STUFF

Lighting really is the unsung hero of alfresco styling. The right pendant or string of festoon lights can instantly turn your space from daytime hangout to nighttime magic. If your yard’s visible through big windows, think about how it looks after dark - no one wants to stare into a black abyss once the sun goes down! Mix your lighting just like you would indoors: pendants or wall sconces for task lighting, festoons for ambience, and lanterns or candles for that soft, romantic glow. Keep it warm, inviting and a little twinkly, not bright and clinical.

Then comes greenery and we’re talking plenty of it. Pots, palms, trailing vines, or even a cheeky faux plant if you’re not a green thumb. The bigger the pot, the better. Plants can work wonders to soften spaces, hide ugly corners, and instantly make everything feel lush and loved. Cluster pots in odd numbers (it’s more natural on the eye) and vary heights for that lush, layered look.

Step 6: Shade, fire pits & THE FRONT ENTRY

Every good alfresco needs some form of shade. Awnings and umbrellas aren’t just practical; they’re style statements. We love a retractable or motorised awning (especially if it’s solar-powered - fancy!), but if that’s not in your budget, a classic sun umbrella in a coastal stripe is just as chic.

And when the weather cools, a fire pit keeps the good times going. You can go full statement setup or keep it simple with a few chairs around the flames. We love to create circular setups around our firepits to create natural balance and that cosy campfire feel.

Asphalt

Vibes: Practical, modern, low-fuss

Cost: Lower than concrete

Pros: Fast to install (drive on it within 48 hours), cheaper than concrete, flexible so it won’t crack as easily

Cons: It’s black (so make sure that works with the colour of your façade), and it can be hot on little feet

It’s also a great option for steep driveways because of its grip. If we’d used asphalt for the driveway of Lana’s Santorini-style home, it would have clashed badly with her Mediterranean vision board… a reminder to always match your materials to the overall vibe and vision board for your home.

Concrete

Vibes: Clean, classic, versatile

Cost: Mid-to-high

Pros: Durable, long-lasting, relatively low maintenance

Cons: Can crack over time if not properly installed, curing time delays access

Concrete is one of the most popular choices in Australian driveways for a reason. But remember, you’ll usually need to wait a week before driving on it. So if you’re on a tight reno timeline, plan accordingly.

Exposed Aggregate (Pebblecrete)

Vibes: Classic, decorative, non-slip

Cost: High

Pros: Durable, textured, stylish

Cons: Can date over time, more expensive than plain concrete

Think of it as concrete with a glow-up. Just keep in mind, while it looks fabulous, this one will hit your budget a little harder.

Brick OR Pavers

Vibes: Classic, cottage or Hamptons charm through to luxe, statement-making entrances

Cost: High to top end

Pros: Gorgeous patterns (herringbone anyone?), super durable, low maintenance and endless design possibilities

Cons: A bigger price tag and fancy patterns or premium feature pavers can bump that budget up fast
